KUMBHALGARH FORT
Kumbhalgarh, located 64 Km from Udaipur, this mountain fortress built in 15th century was called the "eye of Mewar" because of its strategic position in relation to its agressive neighbours of Gujarat and Marwar.
Designed in accordance with the ancient Hindu treatise, Vastu Shastra, it has a commanding view of the wild and rugged landscape of the Aravallis, having an array of magnificient palaces and ruined temples.
This fort of the Mewar dynasty was named after Rana Kumbha who ruled the territory from Chittor and founded this site in 1458. The fort is one of the 84 bastions built to defend Mewar, out of which Rana Kumbha built 32.The fort of Kumbhalgarh stands a proud sentinel on a craggy mountain along with its consorts, the splendid palaces, near the village of Kailwara and is strategically placed on the northern point of the Aravalli Hills.
RAJSAMAND LAKE
This royal lake is located 66km from Udaipur , one of the numerous artificial lakes found in the Mewar region , built by Rana Raj Singh I in 1660. *It is 4 miles long and 1.75 miles wide with continous water supply from river Gomti.
*By the lake is the Nauchowki("Nine Pavilions") - an elegant stepped embankment with several decorative arches and pavilions built by Raj Singh.
Rajsamand or the royal lake is one of the numerous artificial lakes found in the Mewar region and was built by Rana Raj Singh I in the 1660s. The lake is a large one, 4 miles long and 1¾ miles wide. It has a huge embankment (bund) that is over 1100ft long and 40ft high with several decorative arches and pavilions built by Raj Singh. The Gomti River flows into it, ensuring that it never remains dry. The Nauchowki (nine pavilions) stands mute next to the calm and serene Rajsamand.
EKLINGJI TEMPLE
The temple is situated 20km from Udaipur Eklingji is famous for its 108 temples complex. Built on a shore of a small lake surrounded by hills it is also known as Kailashpuri or the abode of Shiva.
Eklingji is built on the shore of a small lake bounded by the surrounding hills. A religious place from every angle it is also well known as Kailashpuri or the abode of Shiva, the family deity of the ruling Mewar dynasty. Even today the maharana of Udaipur visits this marble temple every Monday. The Lord is regarded as the real ruler of the state who functions through his representative on earth, the Maharana of Udaipur.
NATHDWARA
Nathdwara situated 48km north east of Udaipur , it was built in the 18th century. Also known as the Apollo of Mewar it is famous as the residence of Shri Nathji - one of the popular icons of Lord Krishna . *The idol of Shri Nathji is made from a large black stone and has several animals engraved on it. *Nathdwara is famous for handmade terracottas and pichhwai paintings. *The largest known festival of Nathdwara is Annakuta , which is a continuation of the traditional worship of Govardhana Hill.
RANAKPUR
Ranakpur is located 98 Km from Udaipur, named after Rana Kumbha, is one of the five main holy places of the Jains. Its 500 years old temples are unique in their style & design, with no other place in Rajasthan having the same ambience and setting as that of Ranakpur. |
